At 1PM EST Apple had their keynote a the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. There were about 500 or so Mac Drones at this event all clapping and cheering as the iPad was unveiled.

I too was one of these people. Actually, I wasn’t clapping or even at the event. I barely made it home in time to watch th stream online. I was excited. I thought it was gonna be ground-breaking and revolutionary, but, like most people believe, it’s a flop. Here’s why:

1. There’s no space for it: Most households have a personal computer somewhere, a laptop, and a smartphone. his iPad fits somewhere between the laptop and smartphone. they’re basically inventing a device that we don’t need. Just want. At least with the iPhone and the iPod, there was room for it. We needed those devices. I don’t need an overgrown iPod Touch. Which brings me to my next point:

2. It’s an overgrown iPod Touch: When Steve Jobs started showing off apps on this fandagled device, he said how all native iPhone/iPod Touch apps would work right away on the iPad. These apps then loaded in their original iPhone size on the much larger iPad screen. You then had to hit the 2X button to make it full screen. Two questions: 1. Why don’t they just load them at full screen automatically, and 2. Does he really think we’re that stupid?

3. It won’t kill the Kindle: This is clearly a stab at the eReader market. Kindle is the current leader and is obviously being attacked by Apple here. They won’t beat them however, because Kindle beats them in price. Kindle is $ out of the box. hey offer free 3G access for purchasing books from the Amazon Store. Apple does not. Instead, they offer this price matrix:

4. The lowest price is too high and… They give you too many options. Wouldn’t it be so much simpler to just offer the 16GB model? Who needs that much storage for a device that’s most likely gonna sit at your coffee table or in the kitchen somewhere. It’s not like you’ll be storing any music or videos on it. I can’t see the need for it. Maybe iTunes content, but seriously? You can store that elsewhere. The 16GB is good enough and it should include 3G for $549. That’s the best price.

5. Why does it need 3G? If it’s gonna sit at your house, why do you need 3G. The people buying these devices most likely already have wifi in their houses or apartments. I don’t get it.

So, there you have it. It’s a useless piece of junk. The only cool thing about it is the magazine and books subscription service.

I was expecting some sort of art application where you could create on a tablet. maybe it’ll be offered down the road, but this should have been shown off at the keynote.
